The Artist

Michelle Smart - Six years ago, Michelle walked into a local stained glass studio to purchase a stained glass piece she had been admiring. The owner encouraged her to take a class and six weeks later she completed her first stained glass project. Michelle has been fascinated with glass ever since!

A native Detroiter, Michelle was commissioned by the Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce to design their 2007 Legacy Awards. She is the first African-American to have such an honor. The prestigious awards were presented to 14 local businesses and individuals including Chrysler LLC, Detroit, MI, Kellogg's, Kalamazoo, MI and Comerica Bank, Detroit, MI.

"Working with glass gives me the freedom to be creative without boundaries," says Smart. "It is an extension of my spirit that allows me to express my own individual style."

Michelle creates one-of-a-kind, stained glass panels, decorative fused glass art and awards. Her glass creations have been featured in the Detroit News. She was also a featured artist at Inspirations N Glass and Clay, Oak Park, MI; Royal Oak Art Fair, Royal Oak, MI; and Jazz in the Grass, Southfield, MI. She was also featured on the cable TV program "Wake Up Detroit."

Artist Statement

My passion for glass has evolved into a delicate balance between the limitations I place upon each piece I create and the beauty that is crafted as a result of my imagination.

Working with glass gives me the freedom to be creative without boundaries. It is an extension of my spirit that allows me to express my own individual style.

This artistic journey allows me the freedom of expression through the passion and pleasure that comes from creating something beautiful out of glass!
